| The River Cafe International Isla Rio Cuale, Puerto Vallarta 223-0788 |
| Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Review: The River Cafe is perhaps the most elegant restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, with food to match. SETTING - A lovely restaurant hidden away on a tropical island in the Rio Cuale in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Just go to the bridge crossing the river in downtown and take the broad steps down to the Cafe (there are also a dozen or more little shops down there near the cafe, nice for browsing). FOOD - The menu is one of the most eclectic in P.V. Some items seem French and I think, "Oh, it's Continental". But then several more are Italian ... or seafood ... or Mexican ... or contemporary. Click here to go their web site and see the menu. This is a high-end place which has been around for a while, but it's still crowded. Entrees $25-$35. AMBIANCE - As with many restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, it is open-air. The beautiful building is a mix of romantic colonial Mexican architecture (inside) and contemporary (outside). The setting on a small, lush island gives the feeling of being in the country. At the front door is their large, well-appointed (and very popular) bar which usually has a small band playing light jazz later in the evening. RESERVATIONS - A good idea, especially during high season. BOTTOM LINE - The River Cafe is long known for fine dining. The menu is creative and up-to-date, the service is friendly, and the setting is gorgeous. |
